WHY JOIN WORKERS UNITED?

Why join Workers United?

We are a diverse and growing union

Workers United represents 10,000 workers across Canada, and 100,000 more across the United States. Our members speak over 50 languages, live in communities both large and small, work for international corporations and small local businesses, and can be found in a wide range of industries, including: garment and apparel; plastics, auto parts and industrial manufacturing; transportation, warehousing, and distribution; retail; food services; hotels and hospitality; cleaning services; healthcare and social services; and fitness.

Workers United represents the diversity of North America’s workforce!

We have a long and successful history

Our roots date back to the early 1900s, when U.S. and Canadian garment workers – predominantly women and immigrants – organized to fight for fair and safe working conditions. Although we may have changed names over the past century, our goal has remained the same: protecting the rights of workers and improving workplace conditions.

We understand the issues that workers are facing

Just as we did over 100 years ago, we understand the reality that working Canadians are faced with, and the struggle of today’s workers to maintain a decent standard of living.

We’ve witnessed, for example, the shift from a manufacturing-based economy to a service-based economy. Stable full-time jobs are becoming more temporary, part-time, and insecure. Workers are working harder but wages are stagnating. Fewer employers are offering benefits and pension plans. And employers and managers are increasingly harassing and bullying their employees.

We find this unacceptable!

As such, we are continuously evolving to meet the needs of our members and their communities, including young workers and retirees, and to adapt to changes in the Canadian employment landscape to ensure that workers’ rights are upheld and improved.
